After 20 Years, I'm Finally Ready to Show You the Real Beaujolais
From disappointing first taste to passionate advocate—three wines that changed everything
I remember my first Beaujolais Nouveau in the early 2000s. I was a student in France, wide-eyed and eager. The wine tasted sharp, unbalanced—almost rebellious. I couldn't understand what all the fuss was about.
Twenty years later, everything has changed.
The wine has changed. The region has changed. And I've changed.
This year, for the ninth edition of my Beaujolais Nouveau release article, I'm doing something different. I'm not just celebrating Nouveau (though it's earned its place and improved dramatically). I'm going deeper—showing you the Beaujolais that captured my heart, the one that's been hiding in plain sight while the world focused on one Thursday in November.
What You'll Discover Inside:
A region that has evolved: Why today's Beaujolais Nouveau is richer, more balanced, and more exciting than ever before—and the climate and philosophy shifts that made it possible.
Three wines that tell the complete story:
An 8-year-old Morgon that proves Beaujolais ages as beautifully as Burgundy
A secret Chardonnay from Beaujolais that rivals wines costing three times as much
A sparkling rosé from Bugey that shows Gamay's versatility beyond Beaujolais itself
The pairings that changed my mind: Five-spice duck breast. White bass in ginger cream sauce. Grilled cinnamon pineapple with ice cream. Each wine matched with a dish that brings out its full potential.
Why this matters now: Most wine lovers still think Beaujolais = Nouveau. They think Gamay = simple. They're missing an entire world of complex, age-worthy, surprising wines that deserve attention year-round.
This Is More Than an Article—It's a Movement
I've spent two decades watching this region transform. I've tasted the evolution firsthand—from disappointment to discovery to deep love. And I'm ready to show you why Beaujolais deserves so much more than it gets.
Beaujolais Crus age beautifully. Beaujolais Blanc is an undervalued treasure. Gamay is one of the world's most versatile, underappreciated grapes.
And it's time the world knew.
